Bajura district is ranked 77th district of Nepal in terms of Human Development Index and the district has majority of freed Haliya population. Budhinanda Municipality is a remote area which is located 15 km far from the district headquarter of Barjura. The freed Haliya are deprived from education, health and other government services in this regard, ELCA and LWF Nepal started Improving Livelihoods of Freed Haliya-IDPs project in the district with local partner RastriyaMuktaHaliyaSamaj Federation. Under the project, 14 households of Budhinanda Municipality ward no. 5 were supported for establishment of commercial vegetable pocket area. A total of NPR. 70,000 was supported to all fourteen freed haliya households with vegetable seeds, plastic tunnels, garden pipes, bio-pesticides drums, sprinkles etc. They were also provided one day training on vegetable farming practices from the project. These freed haliya households were only producing cereal crops of maize, wheat, but now, they are continuously engaged in vegetable production.
Mr. AngaChadara and his wife shared that they are earning NPR. 5,000 per month from selling of vegetables nearby market whereas other thirteen freed haliya households also become able to earn NPR. 60,000 a year. Freed haliya households are investing the income in educating their children and also for medical treatment for their family members. All fourteen houses have started saving of NPR. 100 per month at MuktaHaliya Saving and Credit Cooperative Ltd. Kolti. Mr. Chadara said that vegetable farming is much easier than other business and they are not facing any problems for selling their products.
Mr. Nanda BirChadara, the chair of Kapkot Freed Haliya Network said “If we engaged in vegetable farming, we don’t need to beg from others for small money for our household purposes and we need not to go to other countries for employment.” Mr. Krishna Raj Padhya said, “It is very good initiative that project has started vegetable pocket area, I will also take initiative to support this good work by Ward office.”
